The expectations are high on the sequel of Clash of the Titans. And why not? Clash of the Titans is really good, it almost lived up to it's producer's name of being Legendary. Clash of the Titans renewed our sense of understanding (and belief) about the gods of ancient Greece.
However, Wrath of the Titans definitely fell short of the expectations. If you are an analytical person, you would think that the movie has a lot of potential story-wise. The dilemmas our protagonists have to face are good enough and I believe they are standing on good ground when it comes to story building.
The cinematography is very good and the effects are awesome. The monsters are really monstrous to look at, whether big or small. But as we know, time an again, its not the effects that make a movie.

The problem lies with the director's detached approach with the story. It's almost as if the makers of the movie did not believe in the story that they are doing. Just like what I've learned from a popular Filipino director, you must never do something you don't believe in.
There is a lack of development and sustainability when it comes to emotions. When you watch Wrath of the Titans, you neither feel hate, worry, sadness or fear. Nada. Sometimes you are at the point of feeling something for the characters, but the scene is abruptly changed to another, so you are left with something like an "empty feeling" in your gut.
You know the feeling when your heart pumps so hard out of excitement? The scene must mimic that feeling by being fast-paced. Kind of heart-racing, so to speak. Or when you dread that something will happen to a character, and the event happens oh-so-slowly you almost can't take it anymore? It's not there. There's no such thing in this movie. It's as if the director (or maybe the editor) is in a rush to finish the movie. Why so? I was more excited watching the trailer than the movie itself!
My conclusion? It's not as good as we hoped it would be. It's actually two or three levels below its prequel Clash of the Titans. Sad.
Do you think it deserves better than 3 out of 5? Let's hear what you have to say!
